Joomla seo tip: Don’t ever change your url’s!

Since I have a bit of lazy days this summer, I am going to give you a few hints and tips regarding SEO’ing in general, and some of the details surrounding SEO for Joomla.

Today I am going to talk about something I see many people fail to do right, and that makes them go straight to the bottom of the search results. Again and again and again.

The problem of changing url’s is especially common amongst us that uses a content management system like Joomla to control our content.

The reason changing url’s makes it impossible to rank well for a site, is the fact that the complete structure of the site is made up by those url’s. The crawlers of the search engines are following those url’s, and if they keep being different, the pages will never get any Page Rank, and therefore they will never rank in the serps eighter.

What can be done then, you might ask?

If you are using Joomla, you NEED to get hold of any of the components for SEF-urls. I have used both OpenSEF, JoomSEF and Sef Advance, and my recommendation is different depending on what other components you are using.

If you are going to run a web store with VirtueMart on your site, I would go for JoomSEF with their commercial add-on for VirtueMart. It works wonders for getting rid of the ItemID problem that is plaguing Joomla.

If you will not use any third party components, Sef Advance is my first choice. It does not slow down your site at all (almost), and keeps the url’s completely stable even when you do upgrades of the core system.

OpenSEF is hard to recommend right now. It is still not out of beta, and it slows down your site heavily. Untill they have sorted out the speed problems, and have also gotten rid of the tendency of changing the produced url’s I can not recommend using the component.

What is your opinion?

Phishing (stealing access codes) to Wachovia Bank

To all Wachovia customers:
You have probably reached this page because you have clicked on a mail where you could log into your account at wachovia.com

Wachovia has been notified by my that basicus.com was hacked, and that I discovered a phishing-script running on my server. They did not take my mail seriously, and were kind enough to reply about what to do if I recieved a fraudient mail. I seriously recommend that you have a closer look at this bank’s security measures, because I gave them a good oportunity to investigate the phishing-script that was running on this site.

Go to wachovia’s website directly by typing in their web-address in the address-bar of your browser. DON’T click on links in mails that looks like they are legitime - type the address manually!

To Wachovia’s representatives:
I sent you a mail to warn you about this phishing-script, and even offered to send you the script-files so you you could examine them. All I got was two standardized replies about how to handle fraudient mails.

Well - you should have read what I wrote.

This script is probably spreading to many Joomla-based websites - and there are hundred-thousands of them.

To Joomla-owners:
Please check in your components folder if you see a folder with the following structure. If you do, they have gotten to you as well, and you need to delete the folder and the scripts in it to avoid getting abused by some phishing guys trying to use YOUR server for their criminal activities.

The folder structure looks like this:

Root - > components -> com_wachovia - > auth - > AuthService

Joomla in Norway has been born

It is a big thing for me to announce that Joomla i Norge will from tomorrow be ready for “business”. This is a community driven initiative made for and by Joomla! enthusiasts from Norway. We were a few people that saw a need for a more organized structure to building the brand name of Joomla! in Norway, so we decided to establish a foundation, and a new website.
